Kathy Benner is a new guide for our company this year, but is by no means new to Juneau. She and her husband Tim are fiercely dedicated volunteers for the Juneau Raptor Center. They spend much of their free time and personal finances going out into the field to rescue eagles that have had reported accidents. She is not limited to raptors, but just this week took a gosling named Nootka under her wing. She'll pretty much rescue anything.
Our visit to her home/rehabilitation center was an enlightening experience. In order to release the eagles, we followed her into the enclosure where a hand-full of these raptors with 8 foot wing spans were not all that pleased to see us. After Kathy and Tim managed to capture their target in a blanket (a very amusing feat to observe), the birds got shots and were put into crates so we could commute them out to Eagle Beach.
Both were reluctant to leave the crates and embrace freedom, but soon realized that flying was a good idea.
